【Featured March, 2018】Interview with Mai Shiotani, Chief Editor of milieu
On March 28th, opinion media “milieu” posted an interview with Paccloa’s president, Yoko Ogawa under the heading of “Useful Insight For Your First Overseas Business Negotiations – A Great System to Know About if You’re Considering Taking Your Business Global.”
Below is an excerpt of that interview.
Don’t waste your time, and the hardest thing to say is money.
Ogawa:
Don ‘t waste your valuable time.
We will give you an overall picture of the latest international situation and the risks involved in international expansion, and then we will analyze your company in a calm manner together with you.
This initial eye contact is very important, so we sometimes discuss it at length so that we can work together over the long haul.
The other thing that is hard to say is money.
If you don’t understand the overall budget at the beginning, you may end up saying later, “It’s going to be tough after all. ……
— Oh, that’s a waste of time. You expect it, you prepare for it, you allocate the manpower, and then when you open the lid, you find yourself saying, “What, it’s going to cost this much? It’s a real blow to a small company. …… I am grateful that you are able to tell us that at the beginning, even though it is strictly forbidden.
Are most of the products that are being developed internationally unique to Japan?
Ogawa:
No, no, it really varies.
For example, in the system development and IT field, we travel to Silicon Valley almost every year,
- Earthquake crack measurement software (Russia)
- Solar cells (Italy)
- Food production (Spain)
- Components for offshore wind turbines (UK)
- Fiber optic decorative garments (Netherlands)
- Interior home furnishings (India)
- Parts for hydrogen stations (USA)
- Medical equipment (Brazil, USA)
- Food plants (Philippines, U.S.A.)
- Building materials (Germany, Argentina)
And so on and so forth, all over the world, all kinds of commodities, exports, investments, without any restrictions.
“Eek, you say that here now?” –Is that on purpose?
Ogawa:
Yes (laughs).
Then, all of a sudden, the color of the other party’s face changes.
They say, “Nonononon, what are you talking about !” (sweating).
It was like, “You’ve figured out the point of profit that we didn’t want you to know in our business model,” …….
I was going to make it a social call, but now I’ve been found out. ……
— I’m not sure if it’s the first time for a company to expand internationally, but it seems that many people get carried away, get carried away, and end up signing a very costly contract. …… I’m not sure where all the enthusiasm came from.
Where on earth did that enthusiasm come from ……?
